Overview:
1982
– Corner of Howard & Navarro, where Harambee is located,
has the highest daytime crime rate

- Dr. John Perkins, founder, & his wife move into the
house on the corner of Howard & Navarro as change-agents
1983
- Afterschool Program & Summer Day Camp established

years later we have
established integrated programs that serve the youngest of
our community and nurturing our youth through adulthood.
Programs:
The
Preschool
provides
for 18 students ages 2-5, attend our all-day pre-school.
The
Harambee Preparatory School
a
Christian, neighborhood based school enroll grades K-6.
Through small class sizes, community-based educators,
and a disciplined environment, we develop future
leaders. Scholarships are available,
and no child is turned away
because of an inability to pay.
The
Afterschool:
Monday
thru Friday, from 3p.m. to 5:30 p.m., we provide
homework assistance, supervised recreation, karate,
computers, dance, and art for more than 60 children and
youth. We lay a moral foundation through Good News Club.
The
Summer
Day Camp serves children and teens daily,
Monday thru Friday from 8am to 5:30pm. The day camp is
an extension of our Afterschool program.
The
Junior Staff
program Teens
demonstrating academic and character growth are placed
in leadership positions in our tutoring and summer
programs. They earn stipends for their work. Junior
Staffers receive tutoring, attend college and trade prep
courses, study the Bible, and take field trips.
The
Harambee Institute
teaches best
practices in urban ministry at churches, conferences,
and universities, including the Christina Community
Development Association (CCDA), Evergreen Baptist
Church, Young Life, and Azusa Pacific University.
